This poem was written in response to the prompt at Dverse. Written as a Quadrille, it it is set at 44 words exactly and must include the word “jar” or a variation if it.

Can I Keep You?

Can I keep you?
Bottled up in dresser drawers,
Safe and sound, away from harm?
Where you'll never go to wars,
Comforted with other jars
Of lovers lost, or forlorn.
But they never scar!
Can I keep you for myself
protecting you from everything?

  1. Safe but imprisoned. Too many situations where that’s what you have to choose from. It’s like Joni Mitchell’s song, “Both Sides Now.”

  2. Hmmm. This could go either way, I think (and I like that about it). While it could simply be a parent or lover wanting to protect and help someone they love, it also has a hint of a sinister, controlling side. I’m intrigued. 😉

    1. Exactly! Trying to protect the innocent, or another person from living. Are they similar?
