The relationship between classical rhetoricians and reality has been a subject of profound exploration since ancient times. This article delves into the perspectives of five seminal rhetoricians: Gorgias, Plato, Aristotle, Quintilian, and Longinus. Each offers a unique lens. They reveal how language shapes and reflects our understanding of reality.

Gorgias: The Pragmatic Sophist – Classical Rhetoricians

Gorgias, the Sicilian sophist, stands at the dawn of rhetorical tradition. Known for his stylistic prowess and denial of virtue, Gorgias is often criticized for his superficial understanding of rhetoric. His most famous work, Encomium of Helen, exemplifies sophistic rhetoric, emphasizing arrangement over substance. Gorgias taught rhetoric for personal gain, charging high fees and working for the highest bidder, regardless of moral implications. His reality was one of assembling a contingent reality around him, driven by monetary gain rather than communal good.

Plato: The Philosopher of Transcendence

In stark contrast, Plato vehemently opposed Gorgias’ approach, branding it as “false rhetoric.” Plato’s philosophy posited that our perceived reality is a flawed reflection of a higher truth. Through works like Phaedrus and Gorgias, Plato argued for a rhetoric that seeks transcendent truth and the soul’s understanding. He believed in deconstructing the illusions that cloud reality, advocating for a dialectical method to uncover the ideal forms inspired by the divine.

Aristotle: The Systematizer of Classical Rhetoricians

Aristotle, a student of Plato, further developed the relationship between rhetoric and reality. His work, Rhetoric, emphasized the importance of knowledge and logical argumentation. Aristotle took a systematic approach to rhetoric. He considered arguments from all sides. This earned him the title of the ‘father’ of the scientific method. He believed in an external reality that could be communicated and understood through rhetoric. He focused on practical wisdom, virtue, and goodwill to persuade audiences.

Quintilian: The Educator of Morality

Quintilian’s Institutes of Oratory offers a pedagogical perspective on rhetoric. Teaching in the Roman educational system, Quintilian emphasized imitation and moral integrity. He believed that a good orator must be a good person, intertwining rhetoric with ethical conduct. Quintilian’s reality was one of assembling methods to be practiced in person, independent of divine inspiration, stressing the importance of enactment in rhetoric.

Longinus: The Sublime Visionary

Longinus, in his incomplete work On the Sublime, navigates the constraints of his time. He explores the relationship between rhetoric and reality. He focused on style and delivery, citing poets like Sappho and classical texts such as The Odyssey. Longinus’ concept of the sublime ties rhetoric to an acknowledgment of the soul and a higher reality. He argued that true rhetorical genius is innate and can transport individuals to a transcendent reality through lofty language.

Classical Rhetoricians

Tracing the relationship between rhetoric and reality through these five classical rhetoricians reveals a rich tapestry of thought. From Gorgias’ pragmatic approach to Longinus’ sublime vision, each rhetorician offers insights into how language shapes and reflects our understanding of reality. These perspectives underscore the enduring significance of rhetoric in defining human experience and expression.
