Ever wonder what your to-be-read (TBR) shelf says about you? For many readers, the TBR shelf is more than a stack of unread books—it’s a living archive of hope, nostalgia, and possibility. Here’s a glimpse into mine.
The Giants on My Shelf
Sometimes I just like staring at these books—the way they cuddle up like standing, sleeping giants. Even without my glasses, I can sense the titles, each spine contrasting with the next. Some texts are thick and bold, others slim and white. This is my TBR shelf: the shelf that, for some reason, spills into other rooms of the house.
Some days, I sit in awe and imagine the feeling of having read them all. It’s a nostalgia for something that hasn’t even happened yet. And still, the shelf grows—more books standing, some stacked, all as unorganized as their owner’s head. No alphabetical order, no color scheme, no theme. Just clusters of convenience and size.

Custom Shelves, Custom Memories
My shelves are custom, slanted, painted light blue. The wood is sturdy, like a hardback’s double-stitched binding. It’s incongruous and inconspicuous at once, most apparent where the shoulders meet at the top. Four shelves are sandwiched in: the “top bread” hosts an aloe plant and a family photo of my father and me—the only two normal items here. The bottom shelf is just a lonely scale. My books, my scale, and a photo memory.
The Nostalgia of Not-Yet-Read
I like to think every reader’s TBR shelf is a personal archive—a story in itself. There’s a strange comfort in imagining the knowledge and adventure waiting inside each book, even if I never get to them all. The shelf is both a promise and a confession: I want to read everything, and I know I never will.
What Does Your TBR Shelf Say About You?
Is your unread shelf organized or chaotic? Does it say more about your reading habits, your ambitions, or your memories? For me, it’s proof that books are as much about anticipation as they are about experience.
