For the past few weeks, my brain has been fully immersed in marketing mode for the upcoming release of Folklore and Flesh. Honestly, the main thing I’ve been focused on is figuring out how to coax people to pre-order—how to cut through the digital noise and make the pitch land.

So, when I saw the dVerse Quadrille Challenge today from Lisa pop up today, requiring exactly 44 words and the word ‘coax,’ it felt like the universe was telling me to put my struggle on paper. This piece is what dropped, a little slice of the literary hustle. Check out the original challenge here, and below is my entry.

Shelf Life

The algorithm sleeps,
it don't got no soul.
My Folklore verse gotta achieve its goal.
It's a digital grind,
a hustle that's major,
against noise pollution and endless page blur.
I gotta coax the consumer,
make the sale stick,
with a headline so sharp,
it's gotta be quick.
Stop the scroll game.
Look here. Read this. Flesh on the rack.
Your purchase?
A kiss.
It’s worth the read.

So, that’s the poetry, the purpose, and the proof that even when you’re slinging pages, you’re still chasing that muse. This coaxing process isn’t just about selling a book; it’s about building a connection—getting the reader to step off the algorithm’s highway and into the dark, detailed world of Folklore and Flesh.

I hope the rest of the writers on dVerse are accomplishing their writing goals today and staying warm – or maybe you like the cold?

Thanks again for the challenge and motivation to write some poetry.

  1. And everyone responds to marketing differently.

  2. I detest the whole marketing and advertising side of trying to sell art. Ugh!

    Good luck!

  3. You definitely have a skill for poetry, Willy. Book marketing is an ever-changing landscape with new competition every day. Apply the Rule of Seven, which is the old advertising principle that consumers need to see an ad or image 7 times before they engage. Consistent visibility is key. As writers, we are in this for the long haul. If 7 is really a winner, keep throwing the dice.

    1. Thank you for the compliment ☺️ And for the advice as far as following the rule of seven – visibility is definitely key 🔑

  4. We do a lot of coaxing as writers! It is hard to catch attention in three seconds, as folks flip through. Maybe we are more like spiders spinning that invisable web catching them unawares!
    Well done!

    1. Ha, love that analogy- maybe we are more like spiders.

  5. Great quadrille, I bet you’re great at marketing too.

    1. This is Mrityunjay (Jay)

    2. Thanks. I’m trying.

  6. Marketing is so hard–and it’s hard to know what will get people to buy your book (or other product).

    1. Yes, exactly! I have lost sleep over wondering what the “right” way to marekt this book is. Especially as my debut release as a one-man shop. But its fun and I’ll be glad once its over

      1. I don’t know if there’s a right way. I guess it depends on the book and the author.

  7. Horror’s not my thing, but I wish you well with your book. And I do relate to your marketing musings!

    1. Thanks, I appreciate the support 🙏

  8. Willy, you just coaxed me to pre-order your book, on Kobo. Thanks for joining in. Marketing in the jumble of cyberia has got to be a huge challenge.

    1. OMG, thank you thank you thank you 😊 🙏 💓 I am so grateful. Yes, marketing is a challenge as an indie writer. But luckily for me, I enjoy marketing a lot. I just have to figure out how to do it as a publisher. Its a new industry for me but I enjoy a good challenge.

      1. You are very welcome. I think boots on the ground is an effective way to market, but I understand when there are two boots, it does make it a challenge.

  9. Good marketing is like that… coax us to buy… doesn’t it?
