Presenting a Triversen poem, titled “On Repeat,” which delves into the cyclical nature of habits and the search for meaning and answers within the confines of Western practices.

Often cyclical,
I find myself
repeating habits.
Seeking answers
from Western practice
about these patterns
left me empty, but full
with medicine cabinets.
None were passing.
So, I kept reading, drinking,
folly with madness.
Two decades of decadence,
To help you understand it.

“On Repeat”

portrays the speaker’s struggle with recurring patterns and the search for solutions within conventional Western practices. The sense of emptiness, despite being surrounded by remedies, captures the frustration of seeking answers that never truly satisfy. The speaker’s turn towards reading, drinking, and indulgence in madness illustrates the lengths one might go to find solace or understanding.

This exploration of cyclical habits and the quest for meaning is reminiscent of the work of modernist poets such as T.S. Eliot. In his poem “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” Eliot captures the repetitive, often futile nature of searching for significance in a fragmented world. Similarly, contemporary poet Ocean Vuong, known for his poignant reflections on identity and existentialism, often addresses the struggles of finding meaning amidst chaos.

By weaving personal experiences with universal themes of searching and coping, “On Repeat” resonates with the timeless human pursuit of understanding our own patterns and behaviors. The poem’s candid portrayal of the speaker’s journey invites readers to reflect on their own repetitive habits and the ways they seek answers in their lives.
