I’m so grateful for the latest Quadrille prompt from Mish at dVerse. It’s always amazing how a single word can spark an entire train of thought. This time, the word “hibernate” nudged me to reflect on the contrast between nature’s rhythms and our relentless corporate grind, and inspired me to write a “Nature knows but we don’t” poem.

Here’s what emerged—a little meditation on seasons, instincts, and the way we often ignore the cues that everything else seems to honor:

When Seasons Whisper

Nature knows when its time.
Birds fly south
as leaves unwind.
The season's call is
less sublime.
But the corporate world
won't hibernate -
our senses furled,
just torpor, a mild state.
Unlike a bat,
lazily hanging,

Wake up to work,
just like that!

I loved writing this because it reminded me how disconnected we can be from the natural ebb and flow, because as always, nature knows, even when we pretend not to know. Thank you, dVerse, for keeping creativity alive and giving us space to pause and play with words!

What do you think—do we need more “hibernation” in our lives?

  1. I am just about to retire… and have not followed a corporate schedule for a while… it is hard to fill your days I think.

    1. Trust me, it won’t be hard to fill your days. You are going to love it and find out that you will be even busier in retirement. Funny how it works that way.

  2. You leave us in no doubt of your opinion! And I don’t think many would disagree.

    1. Work is overrated 😴 🙄

  3. Having left employment behind just over a decade ago, I relate to this piece strongly. Thanks.

    1. Thank you for reading. The corporate world can be demanding.
