I’m joining in on the dVerse Quadrille today. The challenge is always a fun exercise in discipline: write a poem of exactly 44 words, including one specific prompt word. This week’s prompt word brings a smile to my face.

Today’s word is “smile.”

Instead of going for something cheerful, I wanted to explore the tension behind the expression. I also decided to make the prompt word the finish line—saving “smile” for the very last beat of the poem.
Here is my 44-word take.

The Performance

From ear to ear
as if that's what I'm really
here for.
Giving you an earful
of playful cheers, pull
tears off like dried up
streams. Eyes wide shut
with feels that glide
off the tongues vibe.
Teeth tight surreal,
at you I smile.

I’d love to hear how this resonated with you. Does a “playful cheer” always accompany a smile, or do you find yourself “pulling off tears” to make room for one?

Check out the other 44-word responses over at the dVerse Poets Pub. Thanks for reading!

  1. Smiling with you. Genuinely.

    1. The anon is Selma Martin.

    2. Smiling back at ya ☺️

  2. You made me think of how many muscles it takes to smile! Sometimes a fake smile does turn real–sometimes it’s just forced.

    1. Now I wonder if a fake smile burns as many calories as a real smile.

      1. It might depend on what either leads to!

  3. It’s these words that get me:
    “Teeth tight surreal”

Oh, yes. I’ve been there. “Fake it til ya make it,” where the smiling teeth actually feel like a jail cell, holding the emotion in. Well done!

    1. Thank you for the kind words.

  4. As I was reading it, I saw this:
    “From ear to ear
as if that’s what I’m really here
    for. Giving you an ear
    -ful of playful cheers,
    pull tears
    off like dried up
    streams. “
But I lost that thread here
    “Eyes wide shut
    with feels that glide
    off the tongues vibe.
    Teeth tight surreal,
    at you I smile.”
Though I did want to pronounce that last word as ‘smeel’

    1. Hahah! Yeah, I can understand why you might want to pronounce it that way. I probably will from now on.

  5. Sometimes we smile through the tears, and that’s okay too. I especially like your first three lines and last two.

    1. Thank you for reading

  6. Rarely a smile will hurt

    1. Only when forced!
