Welcome back to the pub. Here is a new piece written for the dVerse Poets “Quadrille” challenge. If you haven’t participated before, the Monday Quadrille invites writers to craft a poem of exactly 44 words, incorporating a specific prompt word. Today’s word is “hunger.”
I absolutely love these tight constraints. They force you to trim the fat and leave only the bone, weaving a complete narrative in a single breath.
The Velvet Trap
He praised the velvet finish, oblivious to the bone meal resting deep within our soil. We poured another glass, watching his flushed throat swallow the trap. Such a beautiful, intoxicating surrender. Tonight, our ancient family hunger will feast on far more than fermented grapes.
This piece is a direct nod to my short story, “Dark Vintage,” from the Folklore and Flesh collection. I wanted to use this prompt to slip back into the minds of the dangerously beautiful family of cannibals who run that lush, sun-drenched winery hidden deep in the hills.
Rather than focusing on the cellar doors locking, I wanted this poem to capture the quiet, macabre intimacy of the tasting room right before the prey realizes what he actually is.
