Kyle is the mastermind behind the Ward series—an adult dystopian-horror saga set inside a sealed American city-prison where an abandoned population has been left to forge its own governments, religions, and war machines. For fifteen years, Kyle has been building this intense, uncompromising universe, culminating in the release of Ward and Catanether, with the third novel, Alessia, launching on September 29, 2026.
But Kyle hasn’t just written a series of novels. He has built an entire multimedia ecosystem. Through his immersive YouTube channel, The Ward Dispatch, he broadcasts real-time, POV cinematic transmissions that serve as canonical side stories, bringing the horrifying atmosphere of the city-prison directly to viewers.

Interview with Kyle Waller
Factions Born from Chaos
Willy: Let’s dive right into the good stuff. You spent fifteen years building the universe of the Ward before publishing Ward and Catanether. When we spoke with sci-fi noir author Daniel Smallegange, he mentioned letting his three-star system unfold organically as he wrote, whereas Nmesoma Okechukwu locked herself away researching laws of the universe to ground her debut. How did the concept of a sealed American city-prison evolve over your fifteen years of development? Did you start with a strict blueprint of its governments, religions, and war machines, or did the factions of the Ward form organically as you wrote?
Kyle: If I can be frank, despite my best efforts to over-plan every single line, character, faction, and religious institution, I really just had to sit down and allow the factions within the Ward to organically create themselves over time.
One of the biggest surprises that I ran into—and frankly, I didn’t experience this until I started working on Alessia—was that the Breedless, the so-called cannibal Vikings who get the worst reputation in the whole city-prison, end up genuinely being one of the factions that authentically helps Calexio and Vioson the most with no strings attached or oaths sworn under pressure.
Subconsciously, what I also ended up creating without realizing it at first was a reflection of the troubles and issues of America, but put into a dystopian and hyper-concentrated lens that makes it impossible for you to ignore.
Outsmarting the Void: Immersive Marketing on YouTube
Willy: Your YouTube channel, The Ward Dispatch, is a brilliant, immersive extension of your books. Instead of conventional book trailers, you present canon side stories as real-time, POV transmissions. Book marketer Alicia Taylor recently celebrated the power of a great book trailer to make a story “come alive” before a reader even opens the front cover, and she notes that “community-driven marketing” and interactive content are the future of the industry. What inspired you to treat your promotional material as a narrative sandbox? How does producing these cinematic transmissions help you find and engage your “tribe” of dystopian-horror fans?
Kyle: So the whole reason for The Ward Dispatch being a thing is the fact that I am not good at book marketing, book promotion, or putting my books out there beyond writing them and physically hitting publish on Amazon KDP.
I realized within the past three or so months that I cannot expect my books to somehow be miraculously found online and a flood of buyers and fans come in and suddenly everything is great. No, I have to go to them. I decided I was going to outsmart myself by creating an entertaining way of marketing in a way that I don’t think has been done before in the way I’m doing it.
While there are plenty of channels out there dedicated to talking about Star Wars, Warhammer 40K, or any other major series, what I’m noticing is that those are people narrating about content they didn’t create. What I am doing is creating cinematic novel dispatches from inside the very universe that I have created; that, to my knowledge, has not yet been done on YouTube.
Who Are You Under Pressure? From Skid Row to the Ward
Willy: The Ward is a dark, claustrophobic adult dystopian-horror saga. At its core are abandoned populations surviving under extreme, self-made systems. In our series, we’ve explored how physical and systemic struggles are used as powerful narrative mirrors—like Dr. Joel Hamilton’s Mud Crab Kingdom using speculative metaphors to represent real-world trauma and survival. In your universe, how do the emerging religions, governments, and war machines of the abandoned population reflect the psychological horror of being sealed away? What does this setting allow you to explore about human nature under pressure?
Kyle: What the Ward allows me to explore about human nature is the question that most humans ask about other humans but fail to ask about themselves: who are you when you’re under pressure? Because the only way to see who a human really is, is to see them when they’re under extreme pressure. Then you find out if they’re genuinely a good human, if they are lost in the middle and are going to remain passive and inactive, or if they are evil-minded and willing to step on other humans to get whatever they want.
A lot of the events that happened in the Ward are a result of me being under extreme pressure when I was a case manager on Skid Row with the homeless in downtown Los Angeles, California. There I was exposed to a number of extreme pressures, such as constantly being aware of your surroundings, watching for knives, firearms, machetes, getting stuck with a dirty needle, walking down the wrong corner at the wrong time, and seeing the wrong thing at the wrong time.
The Creative Soul vs. AI Slop
Willy: There’s a fascinating duality to your creative process. The novels are entirely your own writing, but The Ward Dispatch combines your original narration with AI-assisted imagery. Marketers like Alicia Taylor often highlight how streamlining the technical backend allows authors to focus more on raw creation and deep human connection. How do you balance these two distinct workflows? Does seeing the visual, AI-assisted rendering of your transmissions ever loop back and influence how you write the actual prose of the novels?
Kyle: To be very honest with you, I balance these workflows in a way that I cannot truly explain. I only know that I’m able to fully immerse myself when it comes to the creative writing to the point where you feel like you are walking alongside the main characters and experiencing everything they are.
I’m also the voice actor for my own channel. I write all the original scripts. I do use AI to generate the images that I use for my videos because I can’t afford an illustrator right now at the level that I would need to be paying them in order to create the sheer volume of content that I need.
I believe AI has a place in the creative world as it pertains to being an assistant. The second AI replaces your creativity, then you have gone from speaking from the creativity within your soul to generating AI slop that is only operating based off of inputs and parameters that you give it.
