Thank you Björn Rudberg from dVerse poets for this poetry prompt, that was actually inspired by Taylor Swift’s song “Cardigan” taken from her record Folklore. No, I’m not a Swifty, I just like to attempt Dverses prompts about once a month.

Here is the prompt: write a piece of prose including the given line “You drew stars around my scars” which you may punctuate or break up if you want, but every word in the same order has to be included in a piece of prose (fiction or non-fiction) of maximum 144 word (or if you want to challenge yourself exactly 144 words).

Stars and Scars

Tonight, you cover me in stars,
tie me down, heads, legs and arms.
Bound by spells and stones – the natural law.

You drew stars around my scars.
A pentagram for the dark arts.
A craft for the self-taught.
The bruises symbolize a lost cause
of auto sacrifice to the elder Gods.
But these are from some time ago,
a former self, attempting coup de grais.

Tonight, you cover me in stars,
tie me down, heads, legs and arms.
Bound by spells and stones – the natural law.

The altar calls to me, pulsing scars
to drum beats on animal hide-raw.
Your transfixed face, painted for war.
I begin to glitch like lights, on-off.
One tone, one pitch, one form.
A constant hum, between 0.0 and 0.1
And the clarity of Singularity has begun.

  1. So happy to be able to inspire you with Taylor’s words… not a Swiftie either, but I wanted to pull inspiration elsewhere, and her lyrics are actually good.

    1. I’m glad you did 😌 Because I wasn’t aware of how heavy into literature her background is.
