A Captivating Series: My Review of Waking Gods by Sylvain Neuvel

I read Waking Gods by Sylvain Neuvel in just four days. For me, that is a record. I don’t remember the last time I read a series and was this into it. This is something that usually takes me weeks, if not months, given my habit of juggling 13 books at once. What can I say? I simply couldn’t put this book down.

The story picks up right where the first book left off, so the characters are familiar, and it doesn’t miss a beat. The tempo remains consistent with the first book, making it feel like a seamless continuation rather than a new story.

One of the things I appreciate most about this book is that the author isn’t afraid to kill off some of the main characters. This bold move adds depth and realism to the story. The main character is reintroduced in this novel, taking the place of one who was removed in the first book, and this transition is handled with great care and skill.

The dialogue between characters is another highlight. It’s spectacular—full of attitude, liveliness, and moments of internal conflict. You can tell when characters are troubled and torn between difficult decisions. Some characters remain consistent throughout the novel, while others evolve significantly. There are characters you’ll favor and others you’ll dislike, which adds to the richness of the narrative.

For me, this novel truly touches on all aspects of character development. It builds some characters up while keeping others more enigmatic, all in a very well-executed manner. Needless to say, I scored this book five out of five stars.

I highly recommend the second book in the series. However, if you really want to dive deep and understand it fully, you need to start with the first book. While you could read this book as a standalone, you wouldn’t grasp some of the references and nuances from the first book, which is one of its drawbacks(Content may contain affiliate links.)
