I keep coming back for these Quadrille challenges! Each prompt invites me to think outside the box, pushing me to explore new themes and styles I might not otherwise consider. Whether writing about nature, feelings, or even booze, the community surrounding these challenges is incredibly supportive, providing feedback and encouragement that fuels my passion for poetry.

This poem was written in response to the prompt at Dverse, by whimsygizmo. Written as a Quadrille, it it is set at 44 words exactly, and must include the word “Lift” or a variation if it.

“Uplifting, liftoff, lifted up. Put some lifts in the shoes of your iambic feet. Do some heavy lifting with rhythm or rhyme or barely lift a finger and tap us out some light prose. ” – whimsygizmo

Booze and Bliss

Nothing lifts like that sting
From day drinking.
Its bliss sojourn with fizz.
A remedy for tight lips and
Nonsense.
I just love the way it feels
Inside my skin.
The pumping booze within -
My shit-grin.
I’m the only cloud
Out here floating.

Ah, the allure of booze and day drinking! It’s almost as if Ernest Hemingway himself could have penned these lines while sipping on a daiquiri in Havana. Hemingway once said, “I drink to make other people more interesting.”

Then there’s F. Scott Fitzgerald, who famously declared, “First you take a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes you.”

And let’s not forget Dorothy Parker, who quipped, “I like to have a martini, two at the very most. After three I’m under the table, after four I’m under my host.”

  1. Willy you found some great quotes there. When I day drink, “I know I’m in trouble again.” (Joni Mitchell quote.) Love the Hemingway one best.

    1. Who better to inspire a drinking writer than Hemingway 🙂

  2. I love the juxtaposition in that first line:
    “Nothing lifts like that sting”

The lift, and the sting. That’s alcohol, in a nutshell. I like the alliteration in your title, too.

    1. Thank you Miller for reading Miller 🙂

  3. I have never really felt the lure of daydrinking… but if it gets you it does…

    1. Fair enough. It’s more of a curse, than an ‘allure’.
