Now that Folklore and Flesh has transitioned from my late-night fever dreams to your nightstands, I’ve found myself in a rare position: the silence between stories. But as any writer knows, silence is just a vacuum waiting to be filled with something loud, strange, and potentially dangerous.
I’m reaching across the digital void to ask you: What stories are living under your floorboards?
Writing is a muscle, a ritual, and—occasionally—a blood sport. To help you sharpen your pen, I’ve curated six prompts designed to bridge the gap between high-tech futures and low-lit legends. This isn’t just about “writing”; it’s about genre-blending until the lines between magic and machinery vanish.
The Prompts: Choose Your Catalyst
1. The Glitch in the Ghost
A digital medium specializes in “data-exorcism,” deleting the lingering code of AI that refuse to pass on. One day, they encounter a fragment of code that isn’t binary—it’s an ancient Sumerian curse written in Python.
2. The Bio-Loom
In a failing utopia, clothing is grown from synthetic DNA to match the wearer’s mood. You wake up to find your favorite jacket has started growing human teeth along the lapel. Why is it hungry?
3. Noir Under the Roots
A private investigator in a rain-soaked, neon city is hired to find a missing person. The only clue? A trail of fresh forest moss leading into a high-security server farm where no organic life has stepped in a decade.
4. The Martian Changeling
Life on the first Mars colony is strictly regulated by biology. When a mother realizes her child is breathing the carbon-heavy atmosphere without a suit—and speaking a language that sounds like grinding stones—she has to decide: is he an evolution or a folklore nightmare come to life?
5. The Clockwork Curse
A steampunk inventor discovers a way to “automate” luck using a complex series of gears and springs. The device works perfectly, but every time the user wins, someone in their lineage—past or future—suffers an equal loss.
6. The Last Recipe
In a world of flavor-printed nutrient bars, an underground chef finds a handwritten grimoire of “forbidden flavors.” The first recipe requires a pinch of stardust and a memory you’re willing to lose forever.

Why These? Why Now?
We often think of science fiction as “what might be” and folklore as “what was.” The most haunting stories—the ones that stick to your ribs—happen when those two worlds collide. As I’ve discussed in our dystopian dreams feature, perfection is boring. It’s the “failed” parts of our worlds where the best fiction grows.
