The Earth Keeps Receipts

Before the science got sanitized and the world got small, the local papers were screaming about what lay under the prairie grass. Down in Southern Illinois—Little Egypt—the mounds weren’t just hills; they were vaults. We’re talking about a time when the ink was wet and the mystery was still wide open.

Here’s a 44-word look back at what they pulled from the dirt near Shawneetown for this week’s Quadrille challenge.

Star-Born

Homage to the past, the one that came before time collapsed, when angels walked the planets and the Gods measured parallax with hand-held devices controlling clouds and aircraft. A reality sensed in dream states and math equations, we found these star-born ancient bone relics.

We measure the world by what we can prove today, but we often forget the weight of what we’ve already buried and labeled “missing.”

The mounds are silent now, but the broadsheets don’t lie. Thanks for stopping by the pub today—keep your eyes on the horizon and your shovels ready.

What’s hiding in your local earth?

  4. digging in the dirt.. one of my favorites… it’s the feel that makes me whole… layers upon layers time comes and goes… once buried forgotten… maybe so maybe not.. i still have yet to touch human bones… they seem sacred to me…. but now we burn ’em, put ’em in a box… they sit in places gathering dust or we open the box and let them fly in the wind…. now i hear you can make human bones into rocks… i love rocks…

    1. whoa, whoa, whoa – you can turn human bones into rocks? I’m about to go down a rabbit hole.
