It is officially Mad March, a time defined by a visceral, frantic, pent-up energy that claws its way toward freedom. I have to credit this week’s dVerse Poets Pub prompt for finally forcing me to learn what “March Madness” really means—and it has nothing to do with brackets. This is the Nether Month, a liminal space where “goth vibes” and “summer dreaming” collide in a chaotic dance of survival and exploration.
On my walks with the dog this week—where I snapped the cell phone photo for this post—I found myself demanding organization from this seasonal madness. I know I will prevail, but only with a plan. Lately, I have been mentally architecting the next two months of my professional and personal life. There is a specific friction when the mind shifts from the survivalist grit of winter to the expansive hunger of spring.
Currently, I am balancing a high-stakes trifecta. My mind is focused on leveraging the momentum of my recent release, Folklore and Flesh, as I prepare the release strategy for my upcoming novella, The American Bottom, slated for late May. Simultaneously, the physical grind continues as I develop elite fighters with Pharaoh Club and push to scale the gym’s membership.

The sun winks at us
from time to time, through dark skies
with love unbounded
Our minds are butting between the survivalist mindset of winter and the exploratory enjoyment of spring and summer. The Nether Month brings winds and rains to rinse and cleanse—washing the earth and our spirits of calcified or calloused thoughts. It brings hope, but it also teases. On those warmer days sandwiched between the cold, we are tempted to move our plants outside too soon. These last days are the hardest—the ones that come after the sun winks at us, driving us even madder.
