A splendid mix of pain and tension relief. A Shakespearean tragedy with an Oscar Wild twist – for sure!  “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” scores a 5 out of 5 for originality,  acting, film work,  and literary references.  Bravo!

The comical relief is what makes this pain so bearable.  The agony is heartfelt through the whole film,  set in a small grotto town in rural Missouri.  The characters are classic country and original.  Living in a small town after growing up in a big city,  I can totally feel the authenticity of these characters,  meaning,  they did a real good job with the actors.

It’s almost like the film makers play with the idea of dangling a thread of hope in front of the viewers,  pulling them along until the end,  only to learn that the ending is only the beginning.  “This is only the beginning” is foreshadowed when the mom yells at the reporter reporting at the burning billboards.  The reporter suggested this was the end to a tragic story,  but the mom was very clear in that it was not ending at all.
