Shark movies have always held a special place in the hearts of thrill-seekers and cinephiles alike. This summer, two films have made waves in the genre: “Meg 2: The Trench” and “Under Paris.” Both movies promise adrenaline-pumping action and aquatic terror, but how do they stack up against each other?
Having recently watched both films, I’ll dive into the depths of these shark-infested waters and explore the similarities and differences between these two cinematic experiences. Content contains affiliate links.

Plot and Setting
Meg 2: The Trench takes us back to the deep sea, where the prehistoric Megalodon reigns supreme. Directed by Ben Wheatley, this sequel follows Jonas (Jason Statham) and his team as they venture into the ocean’s trench, only to encounter not just one, but multiple Megs. The film’s setting is a mix of underwater exploration and high-stakes survival against both natural and human threats.

On the other hand, Under Paris brings the terror to the iconic Seine River. Directed by Xavier Gens, this film follows marine researcher Sophia Assalas (Bérénice Bejo) as she hunts a mako shark named Lilith that has found its way into the heart of Paris. The urban setting adds a unique twist, blending the charm of the City of Lights with the horror of a shark attack.

Similarities
You know me, im always looking for the monsters in literature and how humans are always matched up against them. Both films share a common theme of humans versus sharks, with a focus on survival and the unpredictability of nature. They also incorporate elements of environmentalism, highlighting the consequences of human actions on marine life. Additionally, both movies feature strong female leads who play pivotal roles in the narrative.
Differences in Shark Thrillers: “Meg 2” vs. “Under Paris”
While “Meg 2” leans heavily into the sci-fi and action-adventure genres, “Under Paris” combines horror with a touch of dark comedy. The former’s setting in the deep ocean contrasts sharply with the latter’s urban backdrop, offering different visual and thematic experiences. Moreover, “Meg 2” focuses on large-scale, CGI-driven action sequences, whereas “Under Paris” emphasizes suspense and character-driven storytelling.

What They Do Well
Meg 2: The Trench excels in delivering high-octane action and impressive visual effects. The film’s climax, set on a resort island, provides the kind of thrilling spectacle that fans of the genre crave. However, some critics have noted that the film’s plot can feel disjointed and the character development lacking.
Under Paris, meanwhile, is praised for its unique setting and the performance of Bérénice Bejo. I think I liked this film the best out of the two, simply because of it’s originality in setting and character. I never imagined a shark infested Paris! The film’s blend of suspense and dark humor has been well-received, though some viewers feel that the environmental message can be heavy-handed at times.
