Jack Dempsey was known for incorporating all sorts of different training methods to hone his signature crouching stance and famous two-fisted attack. One method included sessions on a full-sized, freestanding heavy bag, which more closely mimicked the movements of an actual fighter. With the movement originating from the floor and not from above, like a traditionally hung heavy bag, the “Manassas Mauler” would work on his explosive style, employing constant movement around the free-standing bag. It gave the Heavyweight Champ the type of constant, bobbing and weaving target he loved to test himself against. Considering Dempsey’s success, the method must have had its merits. #throwbackthursday
