It’s been a while since I have written any creative content, so I thought I would take up dVerse on another one of their inspiring prompts. WhimsyGizmo has asked us to write a Quadrille poem in 44 words, using the word “hoot” or some variation of it. Altered beast is a theme that I found quite intriguing for this challenge.
Altered Beast
Beneath the Blood moon’s dripping red light hues
Stood a man with himself in cahoots with the two.
Himself and the voice in his head,
dribbling madness of words only they knew.
The gloom of the night pulled from man,
the altered beast, renewed.

The Drone’s Metamorphosis Willy Martinez
- “Immerse yourself in ‘The Drone’s Metamorphosis,’ an award-winning short story that delves into the psyche of Ivan, a drone operator who undergoes a chilling transformation. As Ivan’s humanity is threatened by the cold mechanics of modern warfare, he grapples with the ethical implications and psychological toll of becoming a machine. This gripping narrative, echoing Kafka’s themes, challenges readers to reflect on the cost of desensitization and the value of retaining our humanity in an increasingly automated world.”

War has always been a crucible for transformation, pushing the boundaries of human experience and technological advancement. In ‘The Drone’s Metamorphosis,’ we are invited into the intimate psyche of Ivan, a drone operator who finds himself ensnared in an unimaginable evolution—a fusion of man and machine. Presented as a poignant letter to his mother, Ivan’s narrative delves deep into the existential crisis of losing one’s humanity amidst the cold mechanics of warfare. The story echoes the haunting themes of Franz Kafka’s ‘The Metamorphosis,’ drawing parallels between Gregor Samsa’s inexplicable transformation into a bug and Ivan’s own unsettling change. Yet, Ivan’s metamorphosis is a testament to the modern battlefield, where technology doesn’t just support soldiers; it threatens to consume them entirely. His journey reflects the psychological toll of remote warfare, where detachment becomes both a shield and a prison. Through vivid imagery and a raw, introspective voice, the author explores the erosion of human emotion in the face of relentless conflict. Ivan’s struggle against becoming a mere instrument of war highlights a profound inner battle—one where maintaining one’s identity becomes the ultimate act of resistance. His confrontation with the grotesque fusion of flesh and metal on the battlefield serves as a chilling mirror, forcing him to confront the potential loss of his own soul to the machinery of war. ‘The Drone’s Metamorphosis’ not only captivates with its gripping narrative but also poses critical questions about the ethical implications of modern warfare technology. It challenges us to consider the cost of desensitization and the value of retaining our humanity in an increasingly automated world. Winner of the Veterans Creative Arts Festival for Short Story, this piece stands as a powerful reflection on the intersection of technology, war, and the human spirit. As you read Ivan’s letter, you may find yourself immersed in his struggle and moved by his unyielding determination to remain—above all else—a human being. - Mind on Fire Books
